How KAM, a DARKK MOON rising is saving the Environment with Music

Humans are at a critical point in their history, with more focus than ever before on the environment and the dangers of climate change. Whether it’s a new start-up to clean plastic from the oceans, or a sustainable water bottle company, people are getting creative and innovative in finding ways to help combat the issue of climate change and pollution, and Ottawa artist KAM is amongst those making a bold statement. With his latest music, photography and videography projects this DARKK MOON is paving a path of his own through creative expression and environmental activism.

ORBIS – Dedicated to our ORBIS

“Orbis. 2025, 2030, 2050. These are all going to be key points for humanity, and what we do right now will affect how those times pan out” - @aDARKKMOON

In February of 2019 KAM took to Instagram with a powerful post and embarked on a bold new journey and direction for his creative work. The headlining news was that all streaming proceeds from his upcoming three track EP, ‘ORBIS,’ would be entirely dedicated to environmental initiatives. Even though music and the arts are his core passion, ORBIS signalled a major point for KAM’s artistry and activism as the environment had always been extremely important to him, but this project launched him on a new path that allowed for the combination of both passions into one relentless pursuit.

While the lyrical content isn’t explicitly related the environment (unlike Lil Dicky’s star-studded ‘EARTH’ music video, another instance of music dedicated environmental activism), the photography and videography content was, as even the title ‘ORBIS’ was taken from the Latin word for ‘world.’ Leading the creative direction for his projects, KAM filmed two promotional videos for ORBIS at the National Gallery of Canada’s Anthropocene exhibit which is filled with massive canvases and video displays that showcase the extreme impact of human activities on the Earth and its landscapes. The goal of all this, in the DARKK MOON’s eyes, is to “to provoke thought and hopefully, instil change,” by raising awareness and combating ignorance.

BLEED – For the Forest

Following the momentum initiated by ORBIS, KAM’s next single, ‘BLEED,’ was set to be released at the end of August, and all of its streaming proceeds were to be dedicated to one of the most pressing environmental matters of that time, the Amazon forest fires. By late August 2019 the world was shocked to hear that the Amazon rainforest was on fire, and that little action was being taken to combat the issue. Looking for a way to make an impact, the DARKK MOON took the opportunity to fight back as he joined Leonardo DiCaprio, a long time environmental activist, in dedicating resources to Earth Alliance’s Amazon Forest Fund.

With BLEED KAM opted to release more than just a song, and published poetic pieces to that related to the track’s tale of heartbreak. Also, once again, he paired the release with a photo series and promotional video, and a few days before the the official release of BLEED he even donated nearly all of what he had earned from his entire published discography (including ORBIS) to the Amazon Forest Fund. And to keep everything transparent, he shared the email he received from Earth Alliance with his fans to demonstrate he’s a man of his word.

Stream BLEED on Spotify.
